Green Goblin Pt 1

Christmas Edition

This year draws to a close. 2022 marked an important occasion, the 20th anniversary of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. Some say his Spider-Man trilogy has been more relevant than ever this year with the rise of quotes from the final movie in the trilogy. More important than ever is the first movie. Specifically a speech given by the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) attempting to convince Spider-Man to join him.

This short scene extends to cover the grander evilchad theory, but the key is this quote:

"But the one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail."

We all love to watch a hero fail.

Every single narrative in human history is about failure/something going wrong. Every narrative you've ever read, watched or played; is about something going wrong. Only variations are where the failure happens (how early or late) and what happens afterwards. Even something as simple as an episode of Peppa Pig usually has something going wrong within the first quarter/third.

Tying it back to the post image. The 2022 FIFA World Cup had a lot of heroes failing.

Lets look at the main characters of international football, ranked from least to most exciting:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Kylian Mbappe
  • Conor McGregor

TSUUUUUUUU

The best part of his career has been the past 2 years because it has been marked by a very rapid decline. His inability to score, feuds with coaches, public appearances, outbursts and outrageous salary demands has had him slandered by the media this year. The first 2 had him relegated to a benchwarming position. The world cup was supposed to be his big redemption arc but that all came collapsing very quickly. His biggest headlines was him trying to claim a goal he never scored. For this latest outburst, he was replaced by some random Portuguese player who no one's ever heard of who then wound up scoring a hat trick. Every anime protagonist has a rival, his rival wound up winning the whole tournament and ending the debate on who was the better player in his era in a feel good, "underdog making it" story. Ronaldo's story is far from finished, but we've seen our hero fail.

The last footage we have of him. Is he crying or is he laughing after some kind of psychotic break. Who knows where it goes from here ? I expected a Chris Benoit style rampage.

 TURTLE

The greatest hero in modern France. An overachiever. The chosen one. The golden boy. The face of football today. Won the big one at 18. He's on the cover of all the video games. One of the most highly paid players on the planet, with a contract giving him more control than the manager. He even managed to make it to a 2nd consecutive final.

If anyone can ID the watch Macron has on (its not his usual LMM-01) send it in the contact form.

I never liked Kylian. For the same reasons I never liked Israel Adesanya. They're both highly talented but engage in questionable activities, cringe personalities, seemingly privleged and it always felt like they were being pushed on to the mainstream by unknown higher forces. You can't deny the skills however, they both managed to stack win after win over the past 4 years since their simultaneous rise in 2018.

But their one big fall came this year. Mbappe's loss coming from a manlet, with Adesanya's loss handed to him by an evilchad. The fans they'd gained in years all disappeared after their one big loss. Their haters vindicated and being all smug. My opinions on them changed. I like them now.

They both showed why they're on top. Why they're paid all big bucks. Mbappe scoring a hat trick playing the perfect game as an individual player. Adesanya being forced to fight the perfect fight against a dangerous opponent. For both, perfection wasn't enough.

There's this essence that is impossble to describe. You either get or you don't (some never do). Its intangible like the fatty flavours of sous vide meals prepared by a brazilian chef. Seeing them fall, the thousand island stare in their eyes. Mbappe reclining in the dugout, Adesanya having to accept defeat at in the middle of MSG.

Conor McGregor

The most interesting man of the 21st cenury who will be studied for centuries after he's gone.

To be continued in part 2.
