16/7/20 + Update

I'll start with the update first.

I'm going to move to a one article per week schedule instead of two a week.
I have some important work to do and I'm going to be dedicating time to it.

The screenshots page is live-ish and I'll get around to posting more there.

Back to the topic at hand.

What happened to small phones ? My current phone has a 5.5" screen and even I find it too big. It keeps falling out of my short pockets when running. It seems smartphones smaller than 5 inches are disappearing. We've reached a point where consumer tech products are becoming more and more restrictive on the user and their design is becoming more and more counter productive.

The main idea with a phone is portable communication. Anything else is just a bonus. The 2 things to focus on are portability and improving communication. So how did we end up with 6 inch phones, a tablet 7 years ago, become the new average ?

Like with most problems we face today, the root lies in East Asia. Its the biggest consumer base and they want bigger phones. The main takeaway is to stop using smartphones in general. This surveillance device with your bank info, 2 cameras, a microphone and GPS. Only problem I encountered from personal experience was... nothing now that I think about it. A lot of systems are built around you having your phone with you so you'll experience some issues here and there.

The counter-argument is larger phone screens are more immersive and make viewing videos, films and playing games a much better experience. These people should be shot.

The overall takeaway is technology in general should offer you freedom.
